JOHNNY CYMBAL, immigrated from Scotland to Cleveland, OH, at an early age, became well known with his world-wide hit recording "Mr. Bass Man" in 1962/1963. The formula based on the successful doo-wop tradition with the dominant bass line just uttering one-syllable-sounds like "boom boom", "dah dah" or something like that. In this case Cadillacs/Coasters vocalist Ronnie Bright was responsible for it, a hit recipe Ronnie had also used on Barry Mann's "Who Put The Bomp?" one year earlier. 1938 in Corning, New York, geboren, zog DUANE EDDY mit Familie 1951 nach Phoenix, Arizona, um. Dort traf Eddy 1955 Al Casey, der ihn zum Session-Gitarristen weiterbildete. Lee Hazlewood, Discjockey in Phoenix, hörte Eddys einzigartigen Gitarrensound (Eddy benutzte nur die Basssaiten der Gibson-Gitarre) und nahm mit Al Caseys Hilfe ein paar Titel auf, die er an Jamie Records in Philadelphia weitergab. Der Rest ist Legende. Von Ende 1957 bis Anfang 1964 war Eddy fast ununterbrochen in den Charts, danach noch sporadisch. Nach Jamie ging Eddy zu RCA (1963 bis 1967) um sich danach Colpix Records anzuschließen. Die dort entstandenen 2 Alben befinden sich auf der CD ATC 9094-AK. Ab 1969 entstanden bei Reprise Records 3 weitere Alben, wovon eines, "Tokyo Hits", zunächst nicht in U.S.A. erschienen war. |
Born in Corning, New York, in 1938 DUANE EDDY's family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1951. There, in 1955, Eddy met Al Casey who made him a first class session guitarist with a unique sound created by just using the guitar's bass strings. Phoenix dee-jay Lee Hazlewood heard Eddy's guitar playing and, with Al Casey's assistance, recorded some tracks which he sold to Harold Lipsius of Jamie Records in Philadelphia. The rest is history. Between the end of 1957 and early 1964 Eddy never left the top 100 charts, most of the time with several recordings at once. In 1963 he had left Jamie to join RCA from where he switched to Colpix in 1967. The 2 albums recorded there you will find on CD ATC 9094-AK. In 1969 he joined Reprise Records where he recorded another 3 albums, one of which, "Tokyo Hits", remained unreleased in the U.S. for many years. |

RANDY HOLDEN played lead guitar with the FENDER IV who had some minor though remarkable surf music hits in 1964/1965, which are regarded extremely rare by collectors. Born in Vernon, Texas, in 1936, Roy was introduced to Rockabilly and Rock'n'Roll by Buddy Holly's producer Norman Petty. He signed with Sun Records and had an immediate smash hit with "Ooby Dooby" in 1956. Unfortunately Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records, wanted Roy to sing hard rockabilly tunes, unsuited to his soft full voice. So Roy joined Elvis when he moved to RCA from Sun. But they had Elvis for rock'n'roll and Perry Como for the songs requiring a soft voice, and therefore nothing to do for Roy. The Everly Brothers had just recorded Roy's composition "Claudette" to enormous chart success, so father Ike Everly introduced Roy to his friend Fred Foster of Monument Records. The rest is history: an endless chain of hit records followed, not even ending with Roy's death in 1988. Even "Ooby Dooby" re-entered the charts for the umpteenth time when it featured prominently in a "Star Trek" movie in 1996. |

QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE was one of the most successful live acts in San Francisco during the flower power and drug age of the latter half of the 1960s. Their studio albums were lacking everything the group stood for, but whenever they released an album of live recordings, something great resulted. After many changes in the line-up the group disbanded in 1972. Guitarist Gary Duncan called several former members in for a couple of concerts in the 1990s, recording those as QUICKSILVER. And voila: the great live atmosphere is still there. |
